The Tie That Bonds Chapter 24
"Mia, are you okay?" She nodded; with one question forming in her head. "You've been watching over me these pass few years, no matter where I went." "Yeah." Heero assured, guilt was evident in his voice. "How?" "Your necklace has a microphone attached to it." Trowa informed. "And if you went to a dance club or someplace public. . .we would tap into the security system." "And school?" Heero took the brunette's hand and lead her toward the back of the barn. He pushed aside a bale of hay to reveal a red button. When it was pushed, the back wall of the barn gave way to security cameras that were placed in every room of her high school. "Each summer, before you started a new school, Trowa and I snuck in and placed hidden cameras. We then enhanced the security system and placed electric fields over the windows and doors in case someone tried to attack you in school. The fields can only be activated here." Heero tapped the glass covering of a lever. "It would allow the attacker to remain trapped inside the school until we got there." "I can't believe this." She whispered as she stared at the screens. There wasn't a single corner that wasn't covered by the cameras. "Mia, we don't know why you were left on our door step or what importance you are to the future. . ." Trowa started as he stepped over to the teenager and placed his hands on her shoulders. "All we know is that someone is determined to capture you. . .and we're not going to let that happen." She looked up at the taller man with tears in her eyes. "You've been keeping this from me all this time?" "We were trying to give you a normal life." Heero assured. "So you spied on me all these years." "It wasn't out of mistrust. It was for your own protection." "But isn't that why you taught me self defense? So I can take care of myself?" "These people that's been chasing us are a lot more dangerous than you realize. . .mainly because we don't even know who they are. As far as we know, some of their agents can very well be classmates of yours." Heero reasoned and Mia glared at the Japanese man. It was clear that Mia was starting to lose control. Learning about her pass was bad enough, but now hearing that the two people that she trusted the most have been spying her whole life was the last straw. "The people I go to school with are only kids." "That doesn't matter." "What do you mean it doesn't matter? It matters a lot. What kind of sick people would train kids to be agents? It just doesn't happen Heero." "Yes it does, and it has. Why the hell do you think Trowa and I were thrown into cockpits? We were younger than you and taking people's lives. Times haven't changed." Tears began to spill down Mia's cheeks. "For all you know, Sam could be working with them." "Heero, that's enough." Trowa warned. "Sam would never. . ." "What do you know about him?" Heero challenged. "I know a lot more about him than you do." "Think so?" "Heero." Once again, Trowa was ignored. "You're getting too close and too emotional." "What?" "That's probably what he's wanting. . .to earn your trust. It would be wise to stay away from him." "Who the hell do you think you are? You're not my father! If I want to see Sam, then I will!" With that, she ripped the necklace from her neck and threw it on the ground. It was the first time she had ever risen her voice to either Heero or Trowa. In truth, Heero would have gone after her if he wasn't paralyzed with shock. She stormed pass the house and toward the road. She had just gotten to the street when Trowa caught up to her. "Mia, wait." "No! It's not right Trowa. He's not keeping me from Sam. I won't let him." She wiped away her tears and the Latin snatched her wrist. He spun her around to face him and stared into her eyes. "I know. No one is going to do that." "But he. . ." "He was speaking out of anger. He's not fond of Sam, but he never was. . .he hasn't done anything for the pass six months, and he won't now." More tears appearing, she threw herself into Trowa's arms and buried her face in the depths of his tee shirt. "Why does he hate me Trowa? Why am I never good enough for him? Is he secretly blaming me for this?" "He doesn't hate you or blame you for anything. He loves you Mia, and he doesn't want anything to happen to you. I know he never says it or shows it, but he is proud of you." She raised up sniffling and Trowa wiped her tears. "Really?" "Really. You handle yourself well. . .especially in the dance club last night with Yuji. You have to understand. . .Heero grew up alone. He never had anyone. Now that he does, he doesn't want to lose who he does care about." "Hey, you look a little rough this morning." Sam stated in sympathy. Mia looked up into the deep eyes as she remembered what Heero had said about Sam possibly working for the enemy. "I didn't get much sleep." She answered half heartedly. "Why not?" "Heero and I had a fight." "You okay?" She only nodded, not fully trusting her voice right now. "What did you fight about?" More than anything, she wanted to tell him everything. . .but she didn't. She remembered Trowa suggesting that she try to act as if everything was fine. "He doesn't want me seeing you." "Why not?" "He doesn't trust you." "Who does he trust?" Sam reached over and cupped her chin in his hand. "Mia, I would never do anything to hurt you. . .and I wouldn't allow anyone else to either." "I know Sam. He can just be over protective sometimes. . .and I guess I can understand that." "Well, I think it's about time he start letting go. After all, it won't be long before you go off to college and move from them. What's he going to do if you ever get married? Something tells me that your husband wouldn't be too happy to have Heero watching over his shoulder 24-7." Mia giggled. "Knowing Heero, he'd probably hide a few cameras throughout the house so he can watch me at all times." Heero glared at the image on the screen. "Just because now she knows we're listening, she's going to take cheap shots at me." "Heero, she has to keep up appearance." Trowa assured and looked over at his lover. Wordlessly, Heero stood and started to leave the room. "Where are you going?" "I have work to do." Was all he said before closing the barn door. Shaking his head, the Latin returned his attention to Mia as she stepped from the school. "Are you still coming over for dinner tonight?" Mia asked as he held the car door open for her. "Of course, why wouldn't I?" He closed the door and walked over to the driver's side. "I just figured that things will probably be strain tonight. I just didn't want you to feel uncomfortable." "Hey. If I want to be with you, I'm going to have to learn how to handle Heero, right?" "I guess so." "So, I'm not going to back down from him if I'm going to prove my worth." Mia nodded as she stared at the dashboard. "Hey, cheer up. I hate seeing you like this." He brought her chin up and lightly brushed their lips together. When they parted, she forced a small smile to her lips. "That's what I like to see. Don't worry about anything. Everything is going to be fine." Picking up the transmitter, Trowa headed back toward the house. It wouldn't be long before Mia returned home. As he stepped into the study, he wasn't surprised to find Heero typing away at his computer. He could tell that his boyfriend was taking Mia's comment a lot more harshly than he had shown. It wasn't often that Heero showed how much he was hurting, but when he did, Trowa did everything he could to stop it. . .or at least ease it a little. He stepped up behind the chair and began massaging the tense shoulders. "Just leave it Trowa." "I can't." "I'm fine." "Then why are you trying to push me away?" A small silence fell between them as Trowa waited for a response or a confession. "For the first time in my life. . .everything was perfect. . .now that she knows what's truly been going on, we lost her trust." "We didn't lose it. It's still there. It's just masked under all her confusion, and hurt. She's going to need time. . .but when she fully understands why we're doing this, then everything will be as it was." Trowa stepped to the side of the chair and slid onto Heero's lap. As he expected, tears were spilling from the colbat eyes, and he realized what was hurting Heero the most. "She didn't mean what she said Heero. She still looks to you as a father." "But I'm not." "Yes you are. You may not be her biological father, but you are in every other way. . .and those are the ways that count." He leaned forward and tenderly kissed the silent path of tears. Just as the last tear was kissed away, their lips brushed together in a quick sweeping motion. Heero slid his arm around the taller man; knowing that if it wasn't for Trowa, he would have fallen apart years ago. "What would we have done without you?" "Be guest on Jerry Springer." Heero smirked at the comment. At the same moment there was a knocking at the front door. The moment of intimacy was shattered as their eyes locked for a brief second. They never had visitors aside from Mia's friends. . .but school had just let out only moments ago. There was no way for any of them to already be over. Fully alert, both men sprang from their position and armed themselves with guns that were kept in the drawer of the computer desk. Another knock came from the front door as they entered the living room. Once both guns were hidden from view, Trowa answered the door and was greeted by a flash of bright light. "Hey, long time no see buddy." Duo grinned happily, and lowered the camera, startling Trowa beyond words. Heero was also at a lost for words as he beheld Duo and Wu Fei standing on the front porch. "Are you going ask us in or are you going to gape all day?" Trowa moved to the side to allow the long lost friends in. "What's going on?" Sam wondered as he pulled into the drive. Mia stared at the car, knowing that she had never seen it before either. "I'm not sure. . .but we're about to find out." Fetching her bag from the back seat, she and Sam climbed out of the car and headed toward the front door. She couldn't help but notice how closely Sam was studying the vehicle and she couldn't help but wonder why. She found the living room empty before journeying toward the kitchen. She stopped just outside the kitchen door as she heard someone talking. The voice was unfamiliar to her, and at the same time caused her heart to start pounding wildly. "Are you sure?" Trowa asked in a dead serious tone that Mia wasn't use to. "A hundred and ten percent." The unknown voice answered. "Mia?" Sam tapped her shoulder and she waved for him to be quiet. At that moment, she heard someone step up behind her. She turned around to remember a pair of familiar violets and a cheesy grin. "Damn! Look at you!" Suddenly, Amelia was flooded with memories of her childhood and the funny man that use to live next door. "Duo!" She ran over to him and flung her arms around the older man. "Glad you remember me." He teased as they pulled apart. "Turn around, let me look at you." Blushing, she did as he asked and he whistled lowly. "You grew up to be a full blown hottie. Damn! You must have to get Heero to beat the boys off you." By this time, Trowa, Heero and their unknown guest had stepped from the kitchen. "Damn Heero, you guys did do a good job. If only I was fifteen again." Heero glared at the American for the comment. Suddenly, Mia's eyes turned to Sam. "I'm sorry. Sam, this is Duo. He use to live next door to us. Duo, this is my boyfriend Sam. . .and I would introduce you to him, but I have no ideal who he is." Mia informed and looked over at the Chinese man. "This is Wu Fei." Trowa answered before turning his attention to Sam. "Sam, I'm sorry, but now isn't really a good time to. . ." "No. It's fine. Right?" Everyone turned toward the new comer for an answer. "Sam, is a Preventer." "A what?" Mia asked in confusion, whereas everyone else was staring in shock. "A Preventer." Sam restated before telling Mia the whole purpose of the organization. When he finished, Mia could only gape in disbelief. Her eyes then turned to Trowa and Heero. "You knew about this?" She questioned with tears forming in her eyes. "No. We didn't." Trowa answered slowly. "Sam was sent here six months ago when we got word that the three of you could be in this vicinity." Wu Fei explained. "We wanted to make absolute sure that it was you. . .and at the same time, not arouse suspicion." "Suspicion?" Mia glared at her boyfriend. "As it turns out, there were a few traitors streaming in the Preventers. We wanted to make sure that none of them gained the information of your where abouts." The Chinese boy continued as Sam couldn't look into Mia's eyes. "Sam was the only one I could trust." "Why's that?" Duo wondered and stared at the boy in question. "Because he is my son." "Whoa. That was unexpected." Duo stated wide eyed. "First Heero, now you?" "What do you mean Heero?" Trowa wondered and looked between Wu Fei and Duo. "Amelia is Heero's daughter." "What?!?" Heero and Amelia gasped in unison. "Come on. You can't tell me you haven't noticed." Wu Fei stated and studied Heero. "I thought you to be more intelligent than that." "Wait. Slow down. I'm confused." Mia informed and slumped into a chair. After taking a deep breath, Wu Fei retold the story that he had first related to Duo. Trowa watched his lover from the corner of his eye. He could tell what the truth was doing to him. As their friend finished, Heero stormed from the room through the kitchen. Not a second later, the Latin followed him. Mia could only gaze with her jaw slightly dropped, and tears misting her eyes. Sam kneeled next to her and attempted to comfort her, but she pushed him away. "You've been lying to me all this time." She accused, trying to keep her tears at bay. "Is that the only reason you went out with me? Just because I was your mission?" "Mia, it's not like that." Sam whispered and attempted to cup her hand in his, but she pulled away. "How can I trust you now?" She asked before jumping to her feet and heading toward the kitchen. Sam set out to follow her, but Wu Fei stopped him. "Give her some time. She's going to need to think through this." Sam looked up into his father's eyes. "What are we going to do now?" "We're still following through with the plan." Sam nodded as his eyes dropped to the floor. "Um. . .question." Duo started and stepped
closer to the pair. "If Wu Fei is your father. . .then who's
your mother?" The American was answered with two sets of glaring
black eyes that nearly freaked him out. "Forget that I asked."
